The 2008 AFL-CIO Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Observance held in Memphis, TN

Each year, the AFL-CIO observes the Martin Luther King Holiday. This year’s observance was held in Memphis, Tennessee on January 17-21. The Memphis Observation was particularly significant because it marked the 40th anniversary of the Memphis Sanitation Workers Strike. The strike was Dr. King’s last campaign. He was assassinated in Memphis in 1968 while supporting the striking workers.

The labor movement used the time in Memphis not only to remember the sanitation workers strike and Dr. King, but also to carry on Dr. King's legacy through a program of education and community service.
